Keep a working map
A visible map is more useful than a folded one at the bottom of a pack.
In practice
Mark your starting point and checkpoints before leaving. Keep notes on a route card and carry the paper map in a clear sleeve.
After the trip
Wipe the brass rule dry and keep grit away from the rotating bearing edge.
