Brush first; wash only the area that needs it.
In practice
Let mud dry before brushing. Use cool water on marks, rinse residue, and allow the fabric to dry completely. Reproof waxed cotton in small areas rather than coating the whole bag.
After the trip
Brush dirt from dry canvas. Apply bar wax sparingly to worn patches and keep loose blades covered.
